Word of the week: Vitamin C

Vitamin C has been proven to have far-reaching benefits for the skin. From stimulating collagen production to improving discoloration, while effectively neutralizing free radicals that cause premature aging and skin cancer.  We recommend topical vitamin C to all of our patients, along with an SPF of at least 30, to be used daily.

To be effective, topical Vitamin C must be formulated at a pH of 2 to 2.5 (this high pH can cause sensitive skin to experience stinging when applied) and have a certain concentration of vitamin C, both of which adds to the cost of this product. Two of our favorites, that we have available at Dubois Dermatology & Cosmetics, are the Jan Marini C-Esta Face Serum ($96) and iS Clinical Super Serum Advance+ ($139).

Topical vitamin C is an important part of any skincare regimen, for anti-aging and skin health benefits. These products are best used in the morning. After you cleanse, allow skin to dry for a few minutes, apply vitamin C and then finish up with your moisturizer and sunscreen. Because the skin isn’t exposed to as many free radicals at night, there’s no need to include vitamin C in your evening skincare regimen.
