Rosacea is a common condition of the skin of the face. Up to 10% of the population is affected. Though it tends to occur more often in fair-skinned adults, this condition can be seen in any skin type and in all age ranges. The exact cause of rosacea is unknown. Typically there is redness of the nose and cheeks, but the forehead and chin may also be involved. Tiny broken blood vessels and acne bumps can also occur. Flushing of the face and a gritty feeling to the eyes can also be symptoms of rosacea.
Sunlight (ultraviolet light) is one of the most common triggers. For this reason, people with rosacea should wear a sunscreen daily. Temperature, hot foods, spicy foods, and alcohol can also be triggers. People with rosacea often have sensitive skin and some products may cause itching or burning with application. Effective treatments are available.
